Truth: Dubai strictly controls the internet and media, but private conversations remain private for the most part. However, discussion of political topics and criticising the government should be avoided.

Truth: Despite the strict laws, many rules apply mostly to locals. There are certain leniencies for tourists and expats, as long as they do not intentionally break the law.
